Sen. Ted Cruz is introducing an amendment to the latest round of coronavirus relief funding that would prevent illegal immigrants from receiving stimulus checks.
“Not only does this COVID bill fail to address the real needs of the American people who are suffering, but it hands out billions in taxpayer dollars to illegal immigrants,” the Texas Republican’s office said in a statement to Breitbart News.
Cruz’s office says the amendment would save taxpayers nearly $8 billion.

“Congress should come together to pass my amendment to stop this,” Cruz said. “We need to stand for the American people, get our kids back to school, and reopen our small businesses.”
Democrats have been widely criticized by Republicans for attempts to include benefits for illegal immigrants in various coronavirus relief rounds, and in California, Democrats have pushed through a plan to send checks to illegal immigrants as part of a $7.6 billion virus relief package.
Liberal activists have been openly encouraging Democrats to support stimulus checks for illegal immigrants, including the National Immigration Law Center, Church World Services, and Service Employees International Union, which have been lobbying members of Congress.

“We should be working to include MORE Americans in relief and recovery efforts rather than creating barriers to relief that will leave immigrant workers who are at the frontline fighting the pandemic at risk of hunger and homelessness and making it impossible for them to shelter in place,” the NILC told the Washington Examiner last month. “We cannot recover from the COVID pandemic if all of us are not included in relief.”
